Boarding House Bake Off
Last Wednesday the boarders had the day off school for Wesak Day, therefore a “Bake Off’ was organised for those who wished to display their baking talents.
Floor two, three and four were keen to take part and members from each team were given the responsibility of purchasing ingredients for their respective recipes, courtesy of a generous budget of RM100 each.
All teams had a two hour time limit to complete and show off their final products which were judged and tasted by Mr Troy, Mr Alex, Ms Scout, Ayla and Carter.
Floor two were presented the Most Technical Dish with their chicken wings, chicken stock soup and sponge pudding. Floor three boys were awarded the Most Creative Dish with their humongous chocolate chip cookies. However the floor four girls team consisting of Yubin, Reena, MK and Sally were presented the Overall Winner Award for their beautiful looking and delectable muffins, Hershey Kiss biscuits and Nutella and whipped cream milkshake!! There were some full tummies afterwards.
Table Tennis Doubles Competition
The table tennis doubles competition finals night took place on Monday evening and what an exhilarating evening of competitiveness and gamesmanship we witnessed.
Raziq and Dening challenged and eventually succumbed to Danish R and Hafiz in the best of three games final.
Well done to all of the teams who participated.
Success for basketballers in Phuket
Dening, Danish R, Icha and Ayla were members of the respective boys and girls school 3-a-side basketball teams that both finished runners-up at South East Asia International Schools tournament over the weekend.
Following round robin play on Saturday and early morning Sunday, both teams battled tenaciously in their semi-finals to proceed to the final. The finals were intense and nerve-wracking, and although the teams did not win, the resilience and teamwork displayed was hugely commendable.
Mah Meri Cultural Village
On Saturday, we went to Mah Meri Cultural Village located in Selangor. When we arrived there after an hour ride, the instructor took us for a village walk. We visited their temple and have learnt about how they commemorate their funeral. When we went back to the Mah Meri place, they introduced us how they welcome the visitors; they put water on the feet. They gave us little treats to start off with. The instructor explained the story of young men and women who wanted to bring their Mah Meri Cultural heritage back to life. He walked us through the leaf weaving activity and the carving section. Then, we went for a gallery walk about the Cultural Village. At the gallery walk, we were introduced to many new unusual and different places that we modern people are not familiar with.
Before we went into the main entrance where the people lived, we came across a section of land that was under construction but it is said that the statues inside it prevents the evil spirits entering the village and harming the Orang Asli living in it. After that, we were greeted by two women that sprinkled water on our feet to cleanse ourself from the spirits that might have followed us. Moving along, we came across a woman using leaves to weave out decorations that will be hung around the village.
Then, we celebrated the tradition wedding in the Mah Meri Village. We tried on their wedding costume and learnt their dance Joh-Oh. It gave us an opportunity to experience their lifestyle and tradition. After the wedding ceremony, we had lunch that was served at the second floor. The food was very traditional and it mostly included foods from the malay cuisine such as satay, curry chicken, rice and fruits. Also, the food was served on a woven plate that was covered with a huge banana leaf.
Before we left, we all had a go at playing a game called blow - pipe. The aim of the game was to show us how the hunters hunt for its food resources. We had to insert a dart into the blowpipe, aim and blow towards the bull’s eye on the styrofoam target board and also try to hit any balloons that were around the target.
After all the activities we have experienced, we all learnt about their culture and traditions within the Mah Meri Village. At last, the Mah Meri residents gave us a nicely shaped weaved leafs for a gift to all of us. Overall, it was a captivating trip to Mah Meri Village and a nice experience to take once in our lives.
