Khoo wows us all with outstanding achievement

Thursday, October 4, 2018
Over the school holiday break Year 13 boarder Khoo participated in an Economics essay competition which was organised by the School of Economics, University of Nottingham Malaysia campus and open to all pre-university and high school students in Malaysia.

The topic of the essay competition was: “Discuss critically if minimum wage in Malaysia should be set according to the ‘living wage’ concept?”

We were all pleased to hear that Khoo was announced as the overall winner of the competition. Congratulations Khoo on a fantastic achievement!

Foot Golf provides new experience for all
Last Saturday thirteen boarders as well as Ms Bobby and Mr Phil visited Shah Alam to play the newly invented FootGolf, which players kick a football into a cup in as few shots as possible.

The afternoon air was sticky and warm and we were all excited as we were given scorecards so that we could keep track of our scores. After being instructed of the rules, each person was given  a football and we advanced to the kicking site. After a long, tiring hour of kicking our footballs, we gathered at the clubhouse to tally up the scores. Wenhao was the winner with a score of 48 and unfortunately I recorded the highest score of the day with 111.

The experience was full of laughs and distraught sighs in an afternoon which the activity was very new to many of us. There were however a lot of comments that we would definitely like to play again next term, hopefully early morning before the heat and humidity arrive!

Everyone definitely enjoyed the experience, which goes to show how much fun you can have without staying inside on your phone the entire day.

U18 netballers triumphant victors
The school U18 netball team featuring boarders Zen, Elisa, Jun, Katrina, King Ying and Ayla.

hosted their Garden International and Epsom College counterparts, recording excellent wins against both sides. It was pleasing to see the positional combinations work well which demonstrates how valuable the early morning trainings have been so far this term.

IA Bronze Qualifying Trip @ Bukit Fraser
Over last weekend some Year 10 learners and staff went to Bukit Fraser to complete the IA qualifying trip. My group consisted of Sally, Zinab and Austin. Sally, Austin and I are living in the school boarding house, so it was easier to meet and discuss the trip. We took the individual roles, Sally and I bought the ingredients for our group meal plan and Austin and Zinab gave us some ideas for our meal plan.

The first day of the trip, we hiked the Pine Tree and Abu Suradi Trails. As we entered Pine Tree Trail we were the last of all the groups. We supported each other and when I wanted to give up, there were my group mates who were supportive and helped me a lot.

After we came back to the campsite, we really wanted to take a shower and we found out that we needed to use a bucket to take a shower. It was not a nice place to take a shower, but it was a great memory.

The second day of the trip, we hiked Hermant, Abu Suradi, Mager and Kingsley Trails. We could not use the GPS on the second day. We only could use the map and compass. So when we came out from the campsite, we were a little confused which way should we go. When we had to take Kingsley Trail, we went to the other road and we took a long time to find the right way.

We were so exhausted and Sally and I got back and knee pain. I was beginning to feel tired and grumpy, a lot like many others.

The moment that I went back to the final point, I was really happy that I finished with my team. So our long two day journey is finished and I am surprised that we could finish the trip and I am glad that I have experienced my limitations through this.

Also, I learned many things from IA. Thank you so much to my group mates and teachers who support us so much. I cannot wait to move onto the next stage of IA.
