Food & Fun Celebrating Lunar New Year

Thursday, January 31, 2019
On Tuesday evening we all celebrated Lunar New Year with a stupendous meal provided by our caterers SHF. Before we sat to enjoy the many Chinese dishes on offer, we all were involved with Yusheng or the Prosperity Toss of noodles, vegetable, sauce and condiments. Following dinner, some boarders enlightened us all with a singing and musical instrument performance, and we finished off the evening with many displaying their artistic talents writing Chinese calligraphy or shūfǎ.

Last weekend was the Boarding Council’s Activity choice for this term with the Council gathering feedback from those staying in for the weekend; with majority voting a visit to the cinema to watch the highly anticipated and popular Aquaman. The boarders were very excited to get to see this film, which is the newest release of the Marvel/DC comic movies which have dominated the screens in recent years.

Boarding Council member Maheem organised a cricket match on Saturday evening in which all Year 5-11 boarders took part in. For some, it was their first time playing cricket but it was a really good experience for them. Beginners Wenhao and Najma were particularly impressive hitting many boundaries.

Sunday Brunch Club with Mr Dan enabled boarders to make porridge, a traditional breakfast meal from the regions which celebrate Lunar New Year. Those who were involved cooked the Jasmine Rice with chicken stock which enriched the porridge with a lovely chicken flavour. Whilst the rice was cooking the chefs poached the chicken to shred on top of the porridge as well as having time to make Chinese tea eggs. The other toppings they enjoyed were fried onions, chopped green onions & coriander. This was great fun and the end result was delicious. Yum!

As our Year 11 and 13 boarders finished three weeks of mock exam commitments, houseparents treated them all to some pizza for their hard work and dedication.

Many boarders have performed admirably for the school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams recently at the respective ISAC and KLISS tournaments. The Under 15 boys performed well with Year 8 boarder Lancelot a standout as the team defeated ISKL and Tenby in their pool matches with the two victories ensuring the side qualify for the finals later this month.

Finally, Year 13 boarder Jun was the star of the KLISS Secondary School Swim Gala last Friday with a haul of four gold and one silver medal from the five events that she entered in.

Fantastic stuff Jun!
