Busy Weekend had by all

Thursday, February 15, 2018
Last weekend was a very busy one with Open Day on Saturday hosted in the Boarding House, as well as this years MUN Conference which was held at Nexus including over thirty boarders among the other two hundred personnel from Nexus and other schools.
To have so many boarders involved in MUN as organisers and in other roles such as delegates and press is fantastic. The hard work they have put into this event really paid off and the feedback that we have received has been all positive.
Some of the boarders who were not involved in MUN also volunteered to be Student Ambassadors during Open Day, representing the school and boarding superbly.. The Ambassadors met prospective learners and their families, answering many of their questions and giving tours of the school grounds and facilities as well as inside the boarding house. We are very grateful of these volunteers and proud of their dedication to helping the community.
It has been rewarding seeing our boarders  demonstrate the values and virtues in which we aim to promote with our learners here in boarding.

For those in-house, we had a fun afternoon out at CAMP5 Climbing Gym. The boarders involved learnt new skills and pushed themselves climbing to some of the highest walls in the venue. In a rather individualistic sport the children showed great teamwork and comradery supporting their peers as they were climbing and abseiling the walls, especially as some were overcoming fears of heights, which was fantastic to see. After we finished climbing we all had the opportunity to explore the 1Utama Mall and for some shopping.
After dinner that night we all congregated in the kitchen to make a chocolate fondue fountain with lots of fresh fruit and marshmallows to dip in and enjoy together. This was great fun and brought all of the older and younger boarders together for some chocolatey fun!

On Sunday we started the day with Mr Dan’s Breakfast Club - this time bringing an Italian flavour to the boarding house with an array of frittatas cooked. A frittata is cooked in a pan where fillings are mixed in with the eggs in the pan rather than folded in the center like an omelette. Frittatas are then finished in the oven or under a grill to set the top of the frittata and then turned out onto a plate to be sliced into wedges and enjoyed.
We had a red pepper & onion fritatta with coriander, a mushroom & spinach fritatta and a corn beef hash frittata with parsley. All of the options went down very well with everyone;  many enjoying two or three slices of the Italian breakfast.

Single’s Pool Competition
The annual Boarding House Singles’ Pool Competition has commenced which will take place throughout the term. It is great to see so many ‘new’ players sign up and compete for the much coveted trophy.

Year 12 CAS Trip
At the start of this term, Year 12 went on a 5-day trip to Janda Baik in Pahang for our CAS trip. The trip was a way for us to fully embrace the CAS concept of the IBDP. On the first day, we formed groups that we kept throughout the trip. Throughout the trip we learnt a lot about ourselves, each other and engaging with the world around us. The groups that we formed on the first day were carried on throughout the duration of the trip. With different challenges, team points were up for grabs, which motivated us to work together. Here are some of the activities we did as part of our CAS trip:

Creativity:
We cooked some food for tea for everyone to eat: Roti Jala, Chicken Curry and Brownies. We learnt to make indigenous crafts from orang asli of Malaysia. We planned games to be played with the kids from the orphanage. We also learnt massaging skills from a nearby spa.

Activity:
We went river trekking, did some survival challenges, scavenger hunting, river tubing, ATV riding, river rescue training.

Service:
We visited a rehabilitation centre for disabled children, and we hosted an activity day with children from an orphanage.
The accommodation we stayed in was really comfortable and the facilitators are really friendly. We, year 12s enjoyed this trip, and are really appreciative of the organisers for making this trip amazing. As a year group, we became closer and felt more connected to each other. It's like breaking the ice for the second time. Whether it be working together to complete a challenge, or simply talking to different people during lunch and dinner, we somehow became closer as a year group.
