Boarders show off their artistry talent at Batik&Ceramic Painting Workshop
Monday, November 19, 2018
On Saturday, my boarding friends and I went on a trip to the Batik printing factory in KLCC. Batik is a traditional type of textile art of Malaysia which originated from East Malaysia. The complex is very spacious and manufactures various batik product like baju kurung and other traditional costume.
On arrival to the Kraf Komplek we were introduced to the art of batik printing. The fabrics are pre-printed with a desired design. We have to use paints to colour the design to complete it. In order to do that, the supervisor assisted us with step by step direction. First, he taught us how to blend the colours to darken or lighten the shape by changing the amount of water that needs to be added. Next, he told us that we are free to complete our own batik design. Most of us took more than half an hour to complete the delicate painting. It was a novel experience for all of us since it is not common to paint batik.
After we were done with batik printing all of us were introduced to ceramic painting. We were each given a carved ceramic. We were given the chance to paint it with any combination of 5 different colours. This activity gave us the freedom to develop our own artistic creativity. This was a meaningful day for all who were on the trip because we got to experience something interesting that we had never done before.

This weekend we decided to cook French Toast as a sweet treat for the first weekend back from mid-term break. We got some fantastic Butter-Zopf (Swiss Sunday Loaf) and sliced it up to soak in our custard which was a mixture of milk, eggs, vanilla extract and cinnamon whisked together. After a soak the slices were toasted in a pan to a beautiful golden brown. We enjoyed them with fresh berries, compotes and honey.
