Nexus learners, Eugene Hwang and Cassandra Chua from Year 9X gained entry into the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Tournament of Champions, which will be held at Yale University, USA this November. Ranked 34th among 500 teams around the world, the team participated in WSC Regional round in Indonesia, followed by the Global round at Sydney, before qualifying for the tournament in Yale.

Eugene’s journey started when he participated in the WSC Regional Round at Indonesia where he bagged 8 Gold and 4 Silver medals. His team secured third place in overall team performance and second in debate.

His winning at Indonesia, qualified him to the Global Round at Sydney, where he partnered with his classmate, Cassandra to compete against 2,100 scholars from 28 countries. There, Eugene won 9 Gold and 5 Silver medals whereas Cassandra walked away with 7 Gold and 1 Silver medal. Not only that, Eugene also made it into the top 100 scholars list among the 1,500 competing junior scholars.

WSC is an international tournament which brings together students from over 82 countries with the aim of inspiring them to discover new strengths and practice new skills.

The competition has four main events namely the Scholar's Challenge, Collaborative Writing, The Team Debate, and the Scholar's Bowl. Contestants will be tested across six subjects - History, Literature, Art and Music, Special Area, Social Studies and Science. It is indeed every contestant’s dream to qualify for the final round at Yale, and we are proud Eugene and Cassandra did it.
