IB Graduation Class of 2017

May 29, 2017
To the strains of the traditional graduation song ‘Gaudeamus’ our Year 13 learners filed into the Nexus Theatre and took their places on stage and so began the fourth annual Graduation Ceremony for IB Graduands.

Following opening remarks from Mr BK Gan, (President of Taylor’s Education Group), the keynote speaker, Professor Robert Craik, Provost and CEO of Heriot Watt University, addressed those gathered. The theme of his speech was the preparedness and suitability of our learners to go and tackle life beyond school. When they arrive in university, wherever they go, they will be the equal of, and in many cases better than, candidates from anywhere.

This was followed by the presentation of Graduation Certificates to those leaving.

We recognised the qualities and achievements of our learners over the past two years. The IB Diploma is a challenging qualification – superior to any other around and demanding of time, organisation and effort. The hard yards have been done – tears shed, frustrations vented, the warm glow of satisfaction for a job well done. We now await the results in early July. Particular note was made of those heading off to the London School of Economics, Imperial College London and Oxford University among others. Our learners are indeed equipped to go anywhere in the world and match the best of the world.

The ceremony was broken into two halves by a superb performance from Hamidah Abd Rahman, singing ‘Start’ by John Legend, accompanied by Jasmine Foong.

To finish this part of proceedings we had another keynote speech from two of our leavers, Aiman Fikri Johanuddin and Kwan Ann Tan.

It was considered appropriate that to conclude there should be the presentation of International Award (Duke of Edinburgh) Gold Awards to three of our leaders - Aiman Fikri Johanuddin, Sue Yen Chong and Rachel Low; the culmination of many years of very hard work.

Our Principal, Ms Alison Hampshire ended the event with a few well-chosen words and then it was time for our now ex-learners to depart the stage, through a guard of honour of Year 12s. Following photographs, afternoon tea was served in the boarding house.

That evening the annual Leavers’ Dinner was held at Botanica in Bangsar South. It was a lovely occasion enjoyed by all.
