Parents, You Can Get Your Kids To Cooperate

Parents, You Can Get Your Kids To Cooperate
May 9, 2017
As parents, exploring fresh ways to nurture sibling cooperation at home can be challenging. Of all the pages of parenting advice we know, the best one is having parents to set the examples of positive relationship themselves. Parents are every child’s lifelong teachers and as growing learners, they are receptive towards their parents’ verbal and nonverbal cues. When a child is nurtured by loving and respectful parents, they will mirror these traits when communicating with their siblings too. To understand why a parent’s role is important in nurturing sibling cooperation at home, read on.

Teach the value of mutual respect
When it comes to teaching your children the value of mutual respect in a sibling relationship, set you and your partner as an example. Respect is a treasured trait that combines communication, acceptance, forgiveness, and equality. When communicating with your husband or wife, emphasise healthy communication by listening attentively and acknowledging their thoughts and feelings. Instead of resorting to arguments, put yourself in your partner’s shoes and diffuse any situation calmly. Your kids will mirror the same techniques when facing conflicts with their siblings.

Share joint responsibility at home
Creating a culture of respect at home is also a key ingredient in encouraging positive sibling cooperation, and this can be done through joint responsibility between parents. When performing house chores, for instance, teach your kids to set aside their differences and work together to achieve a common goal. Partner up with your husband or wife and perform household tasks such as gardening, remodeling the living room, cooking a Sunday breakfast, or setting up a Christmas tree together. While you’re at it, delegate easy-to-do chores to your children and encourage them to join in the fun.

Develop positive value in school
At Nexus International School, Putrajaya, helping our students to develop a learning focused relationship through cooperation and mutual respect is what we do best. Set in a school environment that promotes a culture of respect, every Nexus staff members uphold the joint responsibility of care towards our students. Such is strongly emphasized through the Personal Goals in Primary and Personal Social Development programme in Secondary where your children will be. Your kids can also learn our principles of Restorative Practices that encourage our students to repair the relationship when harm has occurred.

Parents hold the first key to fostering positive sibling cooperation at home. Since children are highly receptive towards their parent’s verbal and nonverbal cues, the way you communicate with your spouse is important. Educate your children with the value of mutual respect by taking up joint chores with your partner and the art of effective communication when repairing a relationship. That way, they can emulate these traits to strengthen the relationship and cooperation with their siblings at home.
