SecondaryThe Secondary Department at Nexus International School maintains the
philosophy developed in the Primary years. However, the learning
programme at this level becomes slightly more specialised; based on
subject disciplines and developing greater independence of thought,
identity and value systems. ICT continues to be integrated into all
facets of learning at the Secondary level. The Secondary School makes
provision for learners from Years 7-9, (I)GCSE (Years 10-11) and IB Diploma (Years 12-13, first cohort starts August 2012). The curriculum is designed to challenge learners to think independently and apply knowledge to real life situations through the range of subjects offered. As children progress through Years 7 to 9, they become self-motivated and enquiring learners, ready to take on the challenges of the (I)GCSE examination courses. The subjects offered at Nexus International School, Secondary Department include the following:

The course is designed to equip learners with the best foundation possible for entry into the world’s top universities. The IBO was set up in 1968 with this specific goal and is the programme of choice in international schools worldwide. IB is a two-year programme of study taken in six subjects. Three subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). In addition, learners are required to produce or partake in the three central components of the IB Diploma; these are Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Action and Service (CAS), and an Extended Essay in a personal research topic. Learners select one subject from each group of subjects and decide whether to study these at SL (four lessons per week) or HL (six lessons per week). Learners must select three SL subjects and three HL subjects. The groups of subjects are: Group 1: English Group 2: Second Language, Malay, Mandarin, French and Spanish Group 3: Geography, History, Business Studies, ITGS, and Psychology Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Studies Group 5: Mathematics and Mathematical Studies Group 6: Visual Arts, Music, Theatre Arts, Chemistry, and Economics The IB Diploma course encourages breadth of knowledge, understanding, and experience. These are promoted through the following compulsory areas: The Extended Essay – this is an original piece of research of up to 4,000 words. Learners can investigate a topic of their own interest. This encourages independent research skills. Creativity, action, and Service – this aspect of the course encourages learners to be responsible and compassionate citizens. It can include art activities, individual and team sports and services to the local community. Theory of Knowledge – this part of the course makes learners reflect critically about knowledge gained both in and outside the classroom. The International Award (previously known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award) is an exciting self-development programme available to all 14 to 25 year olds. Over 7 million young people worldwide have taken up the Award challenge. To gain an Award, participants must complete activities in four Sections for a specified minimum period of time. There is an additional requirement of a Residential Project at Gold Level. Participants decide what they would like to do for each Section. Participants engage with their community and discover the impact they can have through:
Adventurous Journey The Adventurous Journey is about adventure and discovery. Participants develop an understanding of the environment, and the importance of working together in a team with a common purpose. It can be on foot, by bicycle, boat or on horseback. Training, preparation, self sufficiency and self-reliance are the key elements. The Skills Section is about developing personal interests and learning practical skills. There are almost limitless possibilities to choose from. There is no set standard that participants must reach: they set their own goals and measure their progress against them. By undertaking some form of organised and regular physical activity, participants show perseverance and improve their fitness. Their goal is to record their individual progress. Most team and individual sports are included, such as football, athletics, and archery. This is only a requirement at Gold Level. It aims to broaden experience through living and working with others (who are not everyday companions). The project takes place over a period of five consecutive days. It requires resilience, adaptability and consideration for others. The Programme is based around three Levels, each successive one requiring a greater degree of commitment.
